Discussion
The Second Continental Congress met in May 1775 to discuss stronger actions for independence because there was getting to be more tension in the American colonies. By this time, the colonists had formed into two different groups: the Patriots, who wanted to escape Britain's control, and Loyalists, those who still remained faithful to England.
On June 11, 1776, five men were appointed by the Second Continental Congress to write a Declaration of Independence from British Rule. Those five men were Thomas Jefferson, John Adams, Benjamin Franklin, Robert Livingston, and Roger Sherman. The first draft was written by Thomas Jefferson and was almost perfect. After making only a few corrections, they presented the document to Congress. Following a few more changes, Thomas Jefferson's work was approved. July 4, 1777, Church bells rang out in joy because this was the day the Declaration of Independence was signed and the nation was officially born.
